Ederson makes Man City history with assist against Huddersfield

Ederson became the first Manchester City goalkeeper in Premier League history to have recorded an assist after his gargantuan goal-kick was converted by Sergio Aguero for the opener in their 6-1 win against Huddersfield Town.

The 25-year-old, who moved from Benfica in the summer of 2017 for £35m, has impressed onlookers since moving to England with his ability to play out from the back and command his box with impressive composure.

However, it was his long-range distribution that proved devastating against Huddersfield.

The Brazilian’s well-weighted strike found Aguero directly from a goal-kick, who, after deftly-controlling the booming pass, then bamboozled Philip Billing before expertly chipping the stranded Ben Hamer from around 20 yards.

Ederson, rather unsurprisingly, became the first goalkeeper in the division to register an assist this season and was the first since Huddersfield’s Jonas Lossl set up Laurent Depoitre during their historic 2-1 win over Manchester United last October.

Record-breaker

This is not the first time that Ederson has rewritten the history books with his feet. In May this year, he broke the Guinness World Record for the longest football drop-kick.

Man City’s first-choice stopper was also the world’s most expensive goalkeeper for a season before his compatriot Alisson and then Kepa Arrizabalaga made the switch to the Premier League this summer for £65m and £71.6m respectively.

Pep Guardiola’s men have made an ominous start to the campaign in defence of their title.

It is hard to imagine eclipsing some of the records they set as a team last season, but a 2-0 win over Arsenal and their subsequent thrashing of David Wagner’s side suggests they are not resting on their laurels.
