Marko Grujic signs new Liverpool deal before completing Bundesliga loan

Marko Grujic has signed a new long-term Liverpool deal before heading out on loan to the Bundesliga with Hertha BSC.

The Serbia international spent last season on loan with Cardiff City where he made 14 appearances and scored one goal as Neil Warnock’s side finished second to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old midfielder began his playing career with Red Star Belgrade in 2013 and would go on to make 40 appearances for the club, scoring six times.

Grujic completed a £5.1m move to Liverpool in January 2016, signing a four-year deal with the Reds before heading back to his boyhood club on loan for the remainder of the season.

An Under-20 World Cup-winner with Serbia in 2015, the midfielder arrived at Anfield in July 2016 and has since made 14 appearances for the Premier League side across all competitions.

After helping Cardiff win promotion last season, Grujic was named in Serbia’s senior squad for the 2018 World Cup which included seven members of the triumphant U-20 group from three years previous.

Despite not making an appearance for the White Eagles in Russia, the Bluebirds were keen to re-sign the 22-year-old. The renewed interest meant a lot to Grujic, however, a move did not materialise before the close of the English transfer window.

Liverpool’s new No.8 arrived from the Bundesliga this summer, the league in which Marko Grujic will ply his trade for the 2018/19 season.

With the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho this summer, as well as the continued improvement from the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner in centre-midfield, Grujic’s immediate future was always likely to be away from Liverpool.

The Bundesliga window does not close until the 31st August allowing Hertha to take advantage of the extended period by securing the combative Serb on loan for the rest of the season, subject to international clearance.

The Berlin-based side finished 10th in the German top-flight last season and Grujic will now have an opportunity to help them build on a mid-table finish this season, starting next Saturday when they take on Nurnberg.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are preparing for a Monday night trip to Selhurst Park to face Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace.
