How Alisson and Salah influenced Klavan’s Serie A move

Ragnar Klavan has revealed that the advice of Liverpool team-mates Alisson and Mohamed Salah was instrumental in him making the decision to leave for Italy.

The 32-year-old, who arrived on Merseyside in July 2016 after playing in the Bundesliga with Augsburg, struggled to hold down a place in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI during his time at the club, sealing a switch to Cagliari on Friday.

Both Alisson and Salah played for AS Roma prior to their moves to Liverpool and offered the Estonian glowing recommendations of Serie A.

“I had offers from several teams, including in other countries, but Cagliari really wanted me,” Klavan told Sky Italia (as reported by Goal).

“Darijo Srna advised me to come here, as I talked to him via Dejan Lovren. Other Liverpool team-mates like Alisson, Salah and Lucas Leiva all spoke highly of Serie A.

“I’m certain we’ll do great things here and I’m really fired up. The city is wonderful and so are the fans. I can’t wait to get started.”

Klavan scored twice in 53 appearances for Liverpool, with his most notable goal being a late winner at Turf Moor as the Reds overcame Burnley 2-1 on New Year’s Day this year.

He played started three games as Klopp’s men made it all the way to the Champions League final in Kiev in May, but was an unused substitute as Liverpool fell victim to a spectacular two-goal cameo from Gareth Bale.

Klavan’s new side lost their Serie A opener 2-0 away to newly-promoted Empoli. Next up they host a Sassuolo side fresh from beating Inter Milan 1-0 in their first game.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are preparing for a Monday night clash against Crystal Palace.

The last time these two sides met at the start of the week, the Reds surrendered a three-goal lead – and arguably the title – as ‘Crystanbul’ was born.
