Eight things you might have missed during the Premier League opening day 3pm kick-offs

Records were broken, debut goals were scored and much more occurred today in the Premier League’s 3pm kick-offs.

The 2018-19 Premier League season got under way on Friday night with Manchester United defeating Leicester City 2-1 at Old Trafford.

On Saturday Tottenham Hotspur kicked of their season with an away victory against Newcastle United, goals from Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen helped the visitors secure a 1-2 victory at St James’s Park.

In the 3pm kick offs, Bournemouth defeated Cardiff City 2-0 at home, Fulham were defeated at home 0-2 by Crystal Palace, Chelsea took all the points against Huddersfield Town with a 0-3 victory at the Kirklees Stadium and Watford beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Vicarage Road.

Here are nine things you might have missed from today’s 3pm kick offs in the Premier League.

1. Ben Foster makes first appearance for Watford since 2007

35-year-old veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster made his first Premier League appearance for Watford since 13th May 2007 vs Newcastle (4108 days ago) this afternoon.

His appearance for the Hornets today is the second-longest gap between two games for a single team in the competition. It was a positive return for the Englishman who notched his 73rd career clean sheet in the Premier League.

First place is Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, who re-signed for Everton after spending 11 years (4837 days) at Old Trafford.

2. Ryan Sessegnon is the fifth youngest player to appear in the Premier League

Fulham have a history of using young players in the Premier League. At 16 years, 65 days old, Matthew Briggs became the Premier League’s youngest ever player when he replaced Moritz Voltz in Fulham’s 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in May 2007.

Now Sessegnon, after becoming the first player outside of the top tier to be nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award last season, becomes the fifth-youngest player to feature in the Premier League at 18 years and 84 days old.

3. Ryan Fraser involved in another goal at home

Fraser is in his element at the Vitality Stadium having been directly involved in six goals in his last eight Premier League appearances for Bournemouth, scoring 4 and assisting two others for his team mates.

The Scotland international scored the first goal in the 3pm kick-offs to put his side ahead in their game against Cardiff City.

4. Schlupp scores his first for Palace

The 25-year-old winger –  who can also play as a full-back – has played for the Eagles for two seasons, but has failed to hit the back of the net in 43 appearances, and hasn’t got a goal for the last three years.

That all changed today as the Ghana international scored Palace’s opening goal of the season against the run of play against recently promoted Fulham.

5. Roberto Pereyra scores five goals in five home games

27-year-old Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra is also having a good time at home. In his last five Premier League games at Vicarage Road he has netted five goals, with two of them coming today.

Today’s goals are the highly technical, quick and versatile midfielder’s 22nd and 23rd of his career and his eighth and ninth for the Hornets since joining them in 2016 – they are also the first time he has scored two goals in a league game.

6. Neil Etheridge saves a penalty on his debut

The 28-year-old made his first Premier League appearance for Cardiff today, and although his first game didn’t get off to the start he was probably hoping for when Ryan Fraser rippled the back of his net on 24 minutes, the ‘stopper more than made up for it moments later.

Callum Wilson was posied to add to Bournemouth’s lead on 34 minutes, but his right footed shot was saved in the bottom right corner.

Etheridge became the first goalkeeper to save a penalty on his Premier League debut since Allan McGregor did so for Hull against Chelsea in August 2013.

7. Jorginho becomes 19th player to score a debut goal for Chelsea

More players have scored on their Premier League debut with the Blues than any other club in league’s history, with Jorginho becoming the 19th score today after converting from the penalty spot.

Jorginho followed his former manager Maurizio Sarri from Napoli in the summer, and he also became only the eighth player to convert from the penalty spot on his Premier League debut.

Brian Deane, Alan Thompson, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Peter Kennedy, Adam Le Fondre, Roberto Soldado and Alexandre Pato are the only other players to have done the same.

8. Wilfried Zaha equals Crystal Palace’s record for goals scored in the Premier League by a single payer

Wilfried Zaha was excellent last season for the Eagles, scoring nine goals in 29 appearances and assisting three for his team mates.

The Ivorian started this campaign in style, scoring his 23rd goal for Crystal Palace in the Premier League against recently promoted Fulham.

No player has more for the club in the competition, only Chris Armstrong has scored as many, but he should expect his record to be broken this season.

9. Eden Hazard completes all his take-ons

Fresh from the World Cup in Russia, Belgium star Eden Hazard returned to Premier League action today for his first league game under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

Hazard was in fine form this afternoon, and he only completed 14 minutes at the Kirklees Satadium. That was more than enough time to complete six out of six take-ons – more than anyone else so far in the Premier League.
