The one player at every Premier League club you forgot was still here

Every Premier League club has at least one forgotten man.

Often, they join with high hopes, only to go on and spend a number of years becoming legends in a club’s development systems, never making the grade in the first team.

You would think, with the amount of lower league clubs looking for players, and the players themselves often craving first team football, that these mythical beings could find themselves a new home where their talents are appreciated and they can prosper.

However, with so many Premier League clubs stockpiling players these days, some of these unfortunate souls slip the net and end up being forgotten by their own fans, as well as those up and down the rest of the country.

With the English transfer window now firmly shut, here is one player from each Premier League club that most neutrals, and even some of their own fans, may have forgot was still there.

Joel Campbell

Club: Arsenal

PL appearances: 23

Last Arsenal league appearance: Aston Villa at home (May 2016)

One of the most loaned players of all time, Joel Campbell’s Arsenal career has gone from exciting potential to finding the nearest exit – which makes the rumours that Arsenal rejected a deadline-day bid for the Costa Rican all-the-more bizarre.

Tyrone Mings

Club: Bournemouth

PL appearances: 12

Last Bournemouth league appearance: Burnley away (May 2018)

A series of injuries and suspensions have restricted this once-promising left-back to just a hand full of appearances for Bournemouth during in his three-year stay on the South Coast.

Outside of football, Mings has a business interest in an interior design company in Bournemouth, maybe a prelude to life outside of Football.

Richie Towell

Club: Brighton & Hove Albion

PL appearances: 0

Last Brighton league appearance: Hull at home (January 2016)

Richie Towell arrived as a prospect from Dundalk in 2015 with much expected of the midfielder yet he has struggled to make an impression in East Sussex.

He spent the entire 2017/18 season out on loan at Rotherham United and despite helping them to promotion out of League One he is unlikely to feature for the Seagulls this season.

Kevin Long

Club: Burnley

PL appearances: 20

Last Burnley league appearance: Bournemouth at home (May 2018)

It will most likely come as a massive surprise to most that Kevin Long is actually Burnley’s longest-serving current squad member, having joined the club in January 2010.

However, his eight-year stay at Turf Moor has yielded just 41 league appearances for Burnley, a series of loan spells supplementing his need for first-team action.

Jazz Richards

Club: Cardiff City

PL appearances: 18

Last Cardiff City league appearance: Sheffield Wednesday away (January 2018)

Jazz Richards looked set to be a real stalwart of the Welsh national team’s defence when he first broke into the Swansea first team back in the 2009-10 season.

However, the full-back was never able to hold down a place at the Liberty Stadium and went on a series of subsequent loan moves in search of first-team football.

Richards made the audacious move to Swansea’s South Wales rivals, Cardiff City in 2016 where he has made just 32 league appearances in two seasons – just six of those appearances came in last season’s promotion-winning campaign.

Lucas Piazon

Club: Chelsea

PL appearances: 1

Last Chelsea league appearance: Aston Villa at home (December 2012)

Joel Campbell’s main rival for the ‘Mr Loan’ title, Lucas Piazon has arguably been a bigger hit during his spells with Fulham than Chelsea.

16 minutes of league Football way back in 2012 is all he has to show for his attempt at the Premier League so far.

Jonny Williams

Club: Crystal Palace

PL appearances: 12

Last Crystal Palace league appearance: Chelsea at home (January 2016)

Jonny Williams has more caps for Wales (17) than he does Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace.

A series of unsuccessful loan moves have firmly pushed the attacking midfielder out of the view of most Premier League fans.

Tyias Browning

Club: Everton

PL appearances: 7

Last Everton league appearance: Liverpool at home (October 2015)

Tyias Browning put in a series of positive performances when thrust into the Everton first-team due to injuries back in 2014. However, the youngster has been unable to build on that positive start and has recently returned to Everton following a loan spell at Sunderland, suffering relegation to League One.

Cauley Woodrow

Club: Fulham

PL appearances: 6

Last Fulham league appearance: Wigan Athletic away (September 2016)

When Woodrow broke into the Fulham first team in 2014 he had already achieved a lot at academy level and he was touted as a top prospect. He made six appearance in 2013/14 as Fulham were relegated and despite being a regular the next season he fell out of contention as injuries took their toll.

He has since been out on loan three times and it is unlikely that he will feature at the club again this season.

Jon Gorenc Stankovic

Club: Huddersfield Town

PL appearances: 0

Last Huddersfield Town league appearance: Barnsley away (February 2017)

The big Slovenian centre back signed for the club from Domzale in 2016 following a loan spell with Borussia Dortmund’s reserve side.

He made seven appearances for the club in the Championship as they won promotion via the play-offs in 2016/17 but failed to play at all for the Terriers last season and it could be another season without footaball for Stankovic in 2018/19.

Nampalys Mendy

Club: Leicester City

PL appearances: 4

Last Leicester City league appearance: Southampton away (January 2017)

Signed for £13million back in 2016 to replace N’golo Kante, a series of cruel injuries has restricted Nampalys Mendy to just a handful of appearances for the Foxes.

The Frenchman spent last season on loan at his former club, Nice.

Lazar Markovic

Club: Liverpool

PL appearances: 31

Last Liverpool league appearance: QPR home (May 2015)

Lazar Markovic has struggled to make the grade on Merseyside since Liverpool splashed out £20million to bring him from Benfica in 2014.

He spent the second half of last season on loan in Belgium with Anderlecht.

Jason Denayer

Club: Manchester City

PL appearances: 0

Last Manchester City league appearance: n/a

Eight caps for Belgium but not a single appearance for Manchester City since joining their academy in 2013.

He performed well on loan at Galatasaray last season but is unlikely to challenge the likes of Vincent Kompany, John Stones and Aymeric Laporte in the Man City defence.

James Wilson

Club: Manchester United

PL appearances: 15

Last Manchester United league appearance: Arsenal away (October 2015)

Once a lightning fast prospect coming out of the United youth academy, James Wilson has been totally usurped by Marcus Rashford and is now looking for a new destination to try and hold down some first-team football after a host of unsuccessful loan moves.

Henri Saivet

Club: Newcastle United

PL appearances: 5

Last Newcastle United league appearance: West Ham United (December 2017)

With 134 league appearances and two cup-winners medals with at Bordeaux, £5million seemed like a safe bet for Newcastle in January 2016.

However, Saivet has managed just five league appearances for the Magpies since then – although he did score on his last appearance in December last year.

Sam Gallagher

Club: Southampton

PL appearances: 18

Last Southampton league appearance: Manchester United at home (May 2014)

Once a bright prospect from the renowned Southampton youth academy, Sam Gallagher has only managed 21 career goals in 116 appearances in all competitions – most of those on loan with only two goals for the Saints.

Paulo Gazzaniga

Club: Tottenham Hotspur

PL appearances: 22 (one for Spurs)

Last Tottenham Hotspur league appearance: Crystal Palace at home (November 2017)

With Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s very easy to forget that Paulo Gazzaniga ever joined Tottenham Hotspur at all – making just one Premier League appearance won’t help fans remember him either, even if he did keep a clean sheet.

Younes Kaboul

Club: Watford

PL appearances: 196 (25 for Watford)

Last Watford league appearance: Southampton away (September 2017)

During his spells with Tottenham, Portsmouth and Sunderland, Younes Kaboul was regarded as one of the more solid defenders in the Premier League – even winning five caps for France.

However, injury has severely hampered his spell with Watford and the centre-back hasn’t featured in a single matchday squad in 2018.

Reece Oxford

Club: West Ham United

PL appearances: 8

Last West Ham United league appearance: Crystal Palace at home (January 2018)

Reece Oxford really caught the eye when he made his Premier League debut on 9 August, playing the first 79 minutes before being substituted for Kevin Nolan as West Ham won 2–0 away to Arsenal.

However, last season he only managed a four-minute cameo against Crystal Palace in the league for the Hammers before being sent on loan to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Kortney Hause

Club: Wolverhampton Wanderers

PL appearances: 0

Last Wolverhampton Wanders league appearance: Brentford at home (January 2018)

Ex-England youth international Kortney Hause has had a tough time with Wolves in the last few years, managing just seven minutes of league football last season.

With the influx of exciting signings coming into the club over the last couple of years, as well as their promotion to the Premier League, it is easy to see why the ex-Wycombe Wanderers defender has fallen out of view.
