Gary Neville: Man Utd’s current defence incapable of winning the Premier League

Gary Neville says Manchester United aren’t good enough to win the Premier League after they lost 3-2 to Brighton on Sunday.

United’s frailties in central defence unravelled on Sunday afternoon as Brighton hit three goals past them in the first half.

Jose Mourinho was in hot pursuit of a centre-back reinforcement over the summer, but the Portuguese tactician failed to land any of his targets. After calamities in central defence against Brighton on Sunday, it’s becoming clear why he was so determined to sign an additional option at the back.

Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof returned to the heart of United’s defence after starting together in the club’s opening day victory against Leicester City. While the partnership held up well against the Foxes, it was in disarray on Sunday, with both players at fault in various ways for each of Brighton’s goals.

The Red Devils also looked sloppy all over the pitch as they committed a litany of avoidable mistakes, loose passes and aimless long balls.

After United’s deserved defeat, Neville, who was commentating for Sky Sports, was asked if he thought United could win the league this season.

“At this moment in time, it looks unlikely,” Neville said during a post-match interview on Sky Sports. “It’s very early in the season but It looks unlikely that Manchester United are anywhere near good enough.”

Neville didn’t just have criticisms for Lindelof and Bailly, but the entire back four which he thinks is not fit for purpose.

“That back four, forget everything else, that back four is not good enough to win a Premier League title. let’s just start and finish with that. The goalkeeper is the best in the world, he’s fantastic, I think in midfield with Matic, Pogba, Fred and there’s other players to come in.

“Up front Sanchez, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, Mata, Lingard they’ve got a lot of good players there. But that back four it looks like it will always cause you problems and it will always concede goals, it’s not got great authority and that is an issue.”

Back in Manchester, United’s rivals Manchester City hammered Huddersfield Town 6-1 at the Etihad to carry on from where they left off last season at the top of the Premier League table.

Man Utd host Spurs at Old Trafford next Monday where they will be hoping to bounce back.
