Guardiola heaps praise on Aguero and says he returned from World Cup in ‘perfect’ condition

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola labelled Sergio Aguero as one of the best strikers in the world following City’s 6-1 victory over Huddersfield on Sunday.

The Argentine forward netted a hat-trick against David Wagner’s side and has looked extremely sharp since his return from the World Cup.

There had been speculation that Guardiola was considering resting Aguero for Huddersfield’s trip to the Etihad, but the City boss opted to play both him and Gabriel Jesus in attack, with the pair scoring four goals between them on the day.

After the match, Guardiola told reporters that Aguero is in the best shape he’s been in since he took over at the club in the summer of 2016.

He said: “Three goals a game is okay!”

“We are not going to demand that. Since he came back and I saw him from the first minute, I said: ‘Wow!’

“He came back perfect. After surgery with the doctor, he feels free now. He suffered last year with some problems but his whole game – not just scoring goals but his passing and his assists… he never stops!

“When that happens, he is one of the best strikers in the world, without a doubt.

“Since he came back, in this period – in the Community Shield, against Arsenal and today, he has been perfect.”

Aguero for the golden boot this season?

The 30-year-old’s early season form has led to suggestions that the City forward could be the standout goalscorer in the Premier League this season.

He won’t be short of competition from the likes of Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane, but Aguero will be there or thereabouts if he can stay fit this season.

Guardiola’s tendency to rotate both Aguero and Gabriel Jesus may not help his chances but, in this form, the former will make it very difficult for his manager to leave him out at all.

Aguero last topped the Premier League scoring charts back in the 2014-15 campaign, scoring 26 goals in 33 games.
