“Gerrard did it for years” – Redknapp highlights Dele Alli’s contribution at Spurs

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has compared Spurs midfielder Dele Alli to Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard after his winning goal against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Dele Alli was fantastic in the Spurs attack against the Magpies, often advancing ahead of Harry Kane as Mauricio Pochettino’s men pushed forward, making himself a constant presence in the box during their 2-1 victory at St James’ Park.

Alli’s first goal of the season, a short header at the back post, is his first headed goal in the Premier League for over a year.

As well as the goal Alli played excellently all afternoon, and Redknapp was full of praise for the England international, comparing his performance to two other England legends.

“He looked sharp,” the former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder told Sky Sports. “He ghosts into the box and it’s what he does so well. We saw it in the World Cup as well.

“It’s a brilliant header, make no mistake about it. It wasn’t an easy one because he’s got to head it back across the goal, but he makes it look so easy. It’s a really accomplished finish.

“Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard did it for years. Getting 10 or 15 goals from midfield is invaluable.”

Redknapp added: “He’s only 22. You have to check yourself sometimes and realise how much he has already done at such an early age. He’s an incredible performer.”

Alli was involved in 19 goals last season, scoring nine and assisting 10 for his teammates. If the England international continues to average the same goals and assists that he has over previous seasons, he will surpass – statistically, at least –  the numbers put up by Gerrard and Lampard over their careers.

Alli’s headed goal was his 38th in the Premier League in 106 games for Spurs and his 71st career goal since making his professional debut for Milton Keynes Dons in 2012.

Those 38 goals have come in 33 unique matches, none of which Tottenham have lost, finishing on the winning side on 27 occasions.

Spurs and Alli will play Fulham in their next game in the Premier League on Saturday, August 18.
