José Mourinho explains choice to make Paul Pogba captain vs. Leicester

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho explained that Paul Pogba was made captain against Leicester City because he understands the club’s culture and has a good relationship with the players.

Amid rumours of a rift between the Manchester United manager and his star player, Pogba starts as United’s captain against Leicester City on Friday night.

Mourinho was asked before kick-off if his choice to select the 25-year-old France international was an attempt to keep the player at Old Trafford amid sustained speculation that he could head to Barcelona later this month.

“No. Last season he was captain a few times,” Mourinho told reporters ahead of tonight’s clash (via the Mirror). ” Valencia is the captain and Paul is one of the options, his third season in the club, made in the academy, understand the clubs the culture, good relation with the boys and a good example today of putting himself available to try and help the team.”

Pogba only returned to training four days ago from an extended holiday after France won the World Cup in Russia in July.

Despite the criticism Pogba endured last season from contingents of the press, his performance – statistically at least – had actually improved from the season before, and he had an excellent World Cup.

United fans, and commentators will be watching the Frenchman’s performance closely this evening as the 2018-19 Premier League season gets under way at Old Trafford.
