Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: I’d rather be a bad loser than win like Ramos

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he will be happy to die in the next 40 years if we are teaching children that it’s “all about winning.”

Liverpool were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League final, but Los Blancos’ triumph was not achieved without controversy – controversy that Sergio Ramos was front and centre of.

The Reds started the final in Kiev in good spirits after convincing victories against Manchester City and Roma in the previous rounds as well as having the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner at their disposal.

However, Mohamed Salah’s night was brought to an unceremonious end when Ramos appeared to judo throw him to the ground in the first half. Then Ramos was embroiled in another incident in the second half when he clashed with Liverpool ‘keeper Loris Karius, the German stopper was concussed as a result.

Many commentators have attributed those incidents to Liverpool’s downfall in the Ukranian capital, a sentiment that Klopp seems to agree with.

“It may have been a coincidence, but Mo Salah was taken out of the game during an outstanding phase of his footballing life, in the middle of the field,” Klopp told Goal.

“Many people will say that these things happen. But if that is the message we are sending to our children, that nothing is out of bounds and it’s all about winning, then I will be glad to leave this planet in 40 years.

“Am I a good loser? No. But during our preparations we had to talk about Ramos because he had influenced the final the previous year with a dive and a red card [for Juan Cuadrado] against Juventus.

“Real Madrid have deserved to win the Champions League, nobody has ever said anything else. But do you have to have those situations with Ramos? No, you don’t.”

Liverpool have had a fantastic pre-season and have strengthened their squad with several key signings including Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Reds will get their Premier League campaign underway on Sunday when they host West Ham United at Anfield.
