Liverpool can pip Man City to the Premier League title – Ian Wright

Ian Wright has backed Liverpool to end a 29-year title drought and lift this season’s Premier League trophy ahead of reigning champions Manchester City.

The Reds were last champions in 1990, their 18th triumph overall, and have finished runners-up on four occasions since (1991, 2002, 2009 and 2014).

Last season under Jurgen Klopp they secured a top-four finish whilst playing an exciting brand of football and following their summer recruitment Wright feels the Premier League will be heading to Anfield.

“They’ve been hoping so since 1990 — but this time I reckon all those Reds might just be right,” he wrote in his Sun column.

“Of course Manchester City are the team to beat again and, of course, finishing above Pep Guardiola’s men is far easier said than done.

“But looking at the squad Jurgen Klopp has assembled, I will be amazed if Liverpool don’t push them very, very close.

“In fact I’m going to stick my neck out and suggest that by May the title will be back on Merseyside for the first time in 29 years.”

Liverpool in the league under Klopp

This season marks Jurgen Klopp’s third in charge of the Reds having joined them months into their 2015/16 campaign.

Under him Liverpool have finished 8th (2015/16), 4th (2016/17) and 4th (2017/18) with the middle season seeing them accumulate their most points (76).

To date the German coach has overseen 107 Premier League outings winning 57 of those, giving him a 53% win rate, whilst they’ve registered 221 goals (2.07 per game) and conceded 120 goals (one every 80 minutes).

After the first round of 2018/19 fixtures Liverpool are top of the embryonic league table having dispatched West Ham 4-0 at Anfield.
