Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has admitted he does not expect any new signings to come in on the final day of the English transfer window.
Last season’s Premier League and FA Cup runners-up up have so far signed Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant this summer but have been linked with a move for several centre-backs ahead of the 5pm deadline on Thursday.
The likes of Jerome Boateng, Yerry Mina, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Kurt Zouma are all reportedly subjects of interest from Mourinho as United look to bolster their defence.
But the Portuguese has revealed he is no longer thinking about the transfer window, with United kicking off the Premier League season against Leicester City on Friday at Old Trafford.
“I’m not confident and the market closes today,” he told a press conference ahead of the Premier League’s opener, according to United’s official website).
“So it’s time – at least for me – to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed, so I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to this first couple of matches.
“Maybe [it’s] three matches because, after Spurs, there is [an] international break. It gives us a couple of weeks to recover people and to prepare people better and to focus on the players that are available.
“So I’m not even thinking about that list of injured players – [Nemanja] Matic, [Antonio] Valencia and so on. I focus just on what we have and we go with everything we have to the first match.”
When pushed on whether he thinks nothing will happen on the final day of the window, Mourinho replied: “The information I have is no.”
Man United’s opening day woes
Despite Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all returning early from their post-World Cup holidays to help United ahead of the opening day of the season, the club are still relatively thin for options.
World Cup winner Paul Pogba, as well as Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini, are all doubts for the match having only returned to training on Monday.
But injuries are where United’s biggest problems lie. Diogo Dalot, Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo, Nemanja Matic, Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera are all out injured.
