D.C. United forward Wayne Rooney has backed his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to achieve Champions League success with Juventus this season.
Ronaldo, 33, completed a sensational £99.2m move to the Old Lady last month and made his competitive debut in a 3-2 win over Chievo during the opening match of the Serie A season.
And Rooney, who is now plying his trade in the MLS with D.C. United, believes Juve will clinch the Champions League trophy this season solely because they boast the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in their ranks.
“He’ll [Ronaldo] do what he’s been doing for the last 10 years,” Rooney told CNN Sport . “He’ll bring goals to Juventus and I fancy Juventus to win the Champions League this year solely for the fact Cristiano has gone there.
“As a person he’s a nice guy, a family guy, works hard and he’s always got his family around him which is great to see.
“He works hard and deserves all the credit he gets because he’s put that effort in to be at the top.”
The pair formed a prolific partnership during their time together at Old Trafford under the auspices of Sir Alex Ferguson and won the Champions League in 2008.
But after leaving for Real Madrid a year later, Ronaldo went on to win club football’s premier knockout tournament a further four times.
Juve in the Champions League
The perennial Serie A champions have not won the Champions League since 1996, over two decades ago, while the only other time they tasted elite European silverware was in 1985.
Juve have finished runners-up on seven occasions – more than any other football club across Europe – with their most recent disappointment coming in the 2016/17 season where they lost out to Ronaldo’s Real Madrid.
Last season the Bianconeri were also put to the sword by Ronaldo and Los Blancos, at the quarter-final stage, as the capital club edged past them in controversial circumstances after Ronaldo scored a 95-minute penalty and Gianluigi Buffon was sent off.
