Mauro Zarate has been accused of betrayal by his brother after performing a U-turn on joining their boyhood club Velez Sarsfield, opting to join Boca Juniors instead.
Zarate – who has played for West Ham United, QPR and Watford in England – agreed to re-join his first ever club Velez this summer after allowing his contract with Watford to expire.
The Argentinian spent part of last season loan at Velez, his third spell with the club, ahead of agreeing a deal to join permanently.
However, Zarate changed his mind at the last minute and signed for Boca Juniors, where the Independent claims the 31-year-old believes he has a better chance of breaking into the Argentinian national team.
His brother Rolando, who also began his playing career at Velez and is now a football agent, has accused Mauro of stabbing him in the back.
“Mauro stuck a knife in my back. I am destroyed,” he told Fox Sports Radio, according to the Independent. “He betrayed the whole family and the 40 years of history that we have with Velez.
“I want to cry. We were born at Velez, we grew up at Velez and my old man has worked here for 40 years.”
Some Velez fans haven’t reacted well to Zarate’s alleged act of betrayal if the Tweet below is anything to go by.

Zarate made just three appearances for Watford after joining the Premier League side in 2017, one fewer than he made for QPR while on loan from West Ham in 2015.
He scored seven goals in 13 games during his most recent loan spell with Velez.
