Mesut Ozil has explained why it was so important for him to take the No.10 shirt at Arsenal following Jack Wilshere‘s exit from the club.
The Germany international has worn the number No.11 shirt since joining Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013.
But with Wilshere leaving on free transfer after allowing his contract to run down, Ozil has been given the opportunity to switch shirt numbers – something he was eager to do.
The 29-year-old, who endured a difficult World Cup campaign with Germany, has revealed why he was so keen to take the No.10 shirt for the 2018/19 season.
– It's more than just a number. Means a lot to me wearing it next season! Thanks, @arsenal

“It has never been a secret how special this number is to me,” Ozil told the club’s official website.
“My childhood idol Zinedine Zidane wore this number and it is still the most characteristic one for the playmaker position.
“I’m looking forward to putting it on for the first time at Arsenal after the summer break!”
No. 10 by nature, No. 10 by number
Mesut Özil has created more chances (474) and provided more assists (50) in the Premier League than any other player since joining Arsenal in 2013/14.

The No.11 has been primarily associated with wingers over the years, so it’s understandable Ozil believes the No.10 is more fitting of his strengths and attributes.
The German has mostly thrived in a central role for Arsenal, as illustrated by the number of chances he has created in north London as well as his incredible assists record.
Ozil wears the No.10 shirt for his country, too. He created seven chances against South Korea, all from open play – the most of any player in a single game during the group stage.
Arsenal begin their 2018/19 Premier League campaign against champions Manchester City at the Emirates in August.
