Why Unai Emery expects Arsenal to show their true colours vs West Ham

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says that he wants his side to have more control in games this season.

Arsenal lost both of their first two games against Manchester City and Chelsea and the new manager has been criticised for his approach to those games.

Emery was criticised for pressing too high against Chelsea, but the Spanish tactician believes that the Gunners came up short in those games because they surrendered control to their opponents – something he is intent on changing going forward.

“My idea is control,” he told Sky, ahead of this Saturday’s game at the Emirates against West Ham.

“Control in the game – but the opposition want the same thing.

“I know we need intensity in every moment in the games. This control is to not let the opposition do their work, their play.

“For me, we didn’t have the control in our first two matches. Saturday is another match, tactically it is different. I want to have more control to find the win in this match.

“We want to go forward and score. Maybe we can do it with one long pass directly or progress with the passes, control with possession to win games,” added the Spaniard.

“We can find [well-worked] goals like we did against Chelsea and we can find them with less passes on the pitch.

“For me, the important thing is all the players know in each match the best way to attack.”

What went wrong for Arsenal vs Chelsea?

Arsenal’s biggest problem against Chelsea was their finishing in front of goal – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has missed the second-most ‘big chances’ in the division this season so far (2), Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi all missed sitters from close range, which would have seen the Gunners reach five goals before halftime.

Instead, the scores were level at 2-2 at the break and Emery’s side were punished in the second half by a late strike from Marcos Alonso.

Arsenal will have the chance to get their first points on the board when they host London rivals West Ham United at the Emirates on Sunday, where midfielder Jack Wilshere will likely start for the Hammers in his first game against his former club since departing in the summer.
