Spurs bounced back after lacking “mental strength” against Inter, says Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has admitted it has taken hard work from the squad to get through their rough patch at the start of the 2018/19 campaign.

Spurs started the season off with victories against both Newcastle United and recently promoted Fulham, before destroying Manchester United in a resounding 3-0 win – their biggest at Old Trafford since 1972 – which certainly made people sit up and notice.

However, since then, the London club went on to lose three in a row, against high-flying Watford, title-chasing Liverpool and then were painfully put to the sword in a last-minute defeat away to Italian giants Inter Milan in their first Champions League match of the season.

Mauricio Pochetinno’s side seem to have started to get themselves back on track after producing a solid performance away to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, which enabled them to leave the south coast with all three points following a 2-1 win.

Club captain Kane, who scored against Brighton with a penalty in the first half, has admitted it has taken a lot of effort from the squad to put a stop to the run of defeats and finally get something for their efforts.

According to Spurs’ official website, Kane said: “It’s a massive win, massive for momentum, for belief.

“Our energy was great. We pressed hard, everyone worked hard around the pitch and got what we deserved.

“Everyone battled, everyone pressed – and that’s when we’re at our best.

“That’s when we start to find gaps because we wear teams down and that’s what happened, especially in the second half, we could have scored three or four more and finished it off but we didn’t and had to fight right until the end but sometimes that makes it feel that much sweeter.”

Kane – who scored his 143rd goal in just 220 matches for Spurs against Brighton – acknowledged the Inter defeat and stated that although sometimes disappointments are part of football, Spurs could have performed better, especially in the latter moments of the 90 minutes.

“Look, it’s part of the game,” he added.

“We know we can play better. On Tuesday, I didn’t think we played terribly but in the critical moments, we lost a bit of mental strength. But look, we’ve bounced back and that’s all we can do.

“Now we have to look forward to the next one. As I said, we had to work harder, that’s the only way to come through these times and that’s what we did today.”

Harry Kane closing in on spot in Spurs’ history books

His penalty against Brighton took him to 143 goals for Tottenham, the same amount as former club striker Jermaine Defoe, except Kane has achieved that feat in, coincidently, 143 matches fewer than the current AFC Bournemouth striker.

This total puts him joint fifth on the all-time Tottenham Hotspur goalscoring list behind Cliff Jones (159 goals in 378 games), Martin Chivers (174 goals in 367 games), Bobby Smith (208 goals in 317 games) and the one and only Jimmy Greaves (266 goals in 379 games).

With years still on his side and a promising goals-per-game ratio, there is no doubt that if Kane spends the rest of his career with Spurs, he will go on to become the greatest goalscorer in the club’s history.

What’s next on the Spurs fixture list?

Tottenham’s next match is against Watford in the Football League Cup this Wednesday. They will subsequently resume Premier League action with an away game at 3 PM against Huddersfield on Saturday before welcoming Barcelona to Wembley in the Champions League.
