Mesut Ozil urged to learn from Liverpool veteran James Milner

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil should learn from Liverpool‘s versatile footballer James Milner in a bid to improve his game, according to former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson.

Ozil hasn’t had the best 2018 in football following a number of different incidences which has seen his stock lower both domestically and on the international stage.

In fact, his international career is seemingly over following his resignation from the German national squad back in the summer amid controversial circumstances.

His form for Arsenal has been severely lacking – across the back end of last season and into this new campaign – with some supporters questioning his place in Unai Emery’s side for the foreseeable future.

Merson believes that Ozil should be watching and learning how Liverpool’s Milner conducts himself in matches and should use him – like any up-and-coming footballers – as a role model going forward.

Speaking to reporters, Merson said: “I think every kid should watch this lad, every kid should watch this lad. Every week he turns up, every week. You never see him think ‘nah, not today’.

“I say every kid, I think Ozil should be watching him to be fair.”

How do Ozil and Milner compare?

This season, Arsenal’s talented – if inconsistent – star has played in six matches (five Premier League and one Europa League), scoring two goals and providing zero assists, a stat Ozil has prided himself with across previous seasons.

For Milner, he has played in seven matches (six Premier League and one Champions League), also scoring two goals – one against Paris Saint-Germain in Europe – while assisting twice for his Liverpool teammates.

Milner is also the captain of his side, which currently sits top of the Premier League having won all six games, giving Jurgen Klopp’s side a 100% record going into their match against Chelsea this weekend.

Arsenal are adapting to life under Unai Emery and languish in sixth, with the side begging for playmakers such as Ozil to provide the extra quality in the final third and regularly put sides to bed in a bid to get themselves back into the Champions League spots.
