Hazard is the closest thing to Ronaldo and Messi – Souness

Chelsea star Eden Hazard is the third best player in world football according to former Liverpool midfielder turned football pundit Graeme Souness.

Hazard has had a fantastic start to the 2018/19 campaign following a successful Fifa World Cup this summer, where his Belgium side finished third overall.

This season, Hazard has scored five goals in six matches with Chelsea enjoying life under new manager Maurizio Sarri since his move from Serie A outfit Napoli.

Former Reds tough-tackler Souness believes that Hazard is one of the greatest players on the planet at present and the closest star to match the talents of Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and Juventus newboy Cristiano Ronaldo.

Souness said: “Hazard has consistently done it in the Premier League for several years now.

“That’s why I agree with Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea’s manager, that he can score 40 goals a season and become the best player in Europe.

“For the past decade, I’ve told my youngest son, who’s now 19, to enjoy Lionel Messi, the finest player to have kicked a ball, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who comes close to that description, too, in their prime because players like them don’t come along for every generation.

“Hazard is the closest thing to them out there at the moment.

“He’s better than Neymar — he’s more consistent and goes to ground less easily — Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale, while Kylian Mbappe is still a few years away from his best.

“Yet Hazard has plenty to do to be bracketed with Messi and Ronaldo.”

After drawing 0-0 away at fellow London side West Ham United this afternoon, Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture comes against league leaders Liverpool at Stamford Bridge next Saturday.
