Diego Costa-like Mitrovic will keep Fulham in the Premier League

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrović will ensure the London club’s survival in the Premier League this season with his “Diego Costa-like” qualities, according to Martin Keown.

Mitrović made the move to the Craven Cottage club from Newcastle United this summer in a deal worth £22 million, following a highly successful loan spell last season which saw him score 12 Championship goals in 20 games as Fulham gained promotion via the playoffs.

The Serbian has carried on this prolific form into the Premier League, scoring five goals in six games as Slaviša Jokanović’s side aim to retain their place in England’s top division.

They currently sit 15th after six games – a position they would most definitely settle for come the end of the campaign – and this is partly down to the goals of Mitrović.

Speaking on MOTD2, former England defenders Keown and Phil Neville discussed the qualities that the 24-year-old possesses, comparing him with Chelsea and Premier League legend Didier Drogba.

Keown believes that he is so effective that he will be the reason why they stay in the Premier League, saying: “He will, if they stay up, will be the reason they do.”

Neville concurred and went into further detail of why Mitrović is such a handful of a player to come up against.

“He’s not Diego Costa but he’s got Diego Costa type qualities, in terms of he’s nasty, he’s horrible to play against, he bullies defenders.

“His leap, there was one in the second half where he lept above [Christian] Kabasele just at a corner and he hit the bar, it was fantastic.

“He is someone who can give them the other option.”

No player has scored more goals than Mitrović in the Premier League this season, with the Serbian level with Chelsea winger Eden Hazard on five.

Fulham’s next Premier League fixture is against Everton at Goodison Park this Saturday.
