Wolves forward Diogo Jota is destined for greatness, says Garth Crooks

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Diogo Jota is “destined for greatness” according to former Tottenham and Stoke City forward Garth Crooks.

Having moved to England from Atletico Madrid to play for the Midlands club last season on a season-long loan, Jota quickly established himself as one of Wolves’ key players in their Championship title-winning season. After having made the move permanent, his form has endured.

Jota, who scored 17 goals last campaign, continued his excellence by defending from the front in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United. He recorded more ‘recoveries’ (13) against the 20-time title-winners than any Wolves player has managed during a single Premier League match this season so far. According to Opta definitions of statistical metrics, “This is where a player recovers the ball in a situation where neither team has possession or where the ball has been played directly to him by an opponent, thus securing possession for their team.”

Jota’s display drew praise from Crooks, who spent half a season on loan with United during the mid-80s.

“Every so often you see a player and a manager who you just know are destined for great things,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“Wolves have Diogo Jota to thank for a magnificent performance and the player is fast becoming a Premier League star.”

Is Nuno Espirito Santo the next Jose Mourinho?

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have impressed during the opening six games of the season, winning twice and taking points off both last season’s top two Premier League sides, United and Manchester City.

After tipping Jota for greatness, Crooks added: “The same is true of Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, whose teams seem to impress me every time I see them.

“There is something of the Jose Mourinho about him – but with a touch of class.”

What’s next for Wolves?

After just about climbing into the top half of the Premier League table, Wolves face Leicester City in the Football League Cup this Tuesday before hosting Southampton in the Premier League this Saturday afternoon.
