Didier Ndong has been sacked by Sunderland for a breach of contract, the League One club have announced.
The Gabonese midfielder, 24, had reportedly not turned up for training at all this summer with any given reason following the club’s relegation from the Championship.
Ndong spent the second half of last season on loan at Premier League club Watford, though did not make a single appearance resulting in the Hornets not taking up a reported option to buy.
And after failed attempts to sell him in the summer, Sunderland have resorted to sacking the midfielder for a breach of contract.
In a statement released on the club’s official website read: “Sunderland AFC has given notice under its contract with Didier Ndong.
“The player, who was under contract with the club until June 2021, failed to return to Sunderland for pre-season training in July as scheduled, nor in the subsequent months that followed. No reason was given for his failure to report and continued absence.
“As a result, the club has accepted Didier Ndong’s repudiatory breaches of contract and notice of the same has been provided to the player.
“Sunderland AFC does so whilst retaining the right to pursue the player and any club he may subsequently join in relation to compensation for the value of the player.”
Ndong’s sacking comes just 12 days after Sunderland let go of centre-back Papy Djilobodji for failing to honour his contract.
Sunderland currently sit third in the League One table after nine games, three points behind league leaders Peterborough.
Didier Ndong’s Sunderland career
Signed from French side Lorient in 2016 for a club-record £13.6m, it was hoped Ndong would help Sunderland in their fight against relegation from the Premier League.

But the midfielder struggled to make an impact in the middle of the pitch, being involved in just five wins in the league in his debut season, experiencing 20 defeats.
With Sunderland in the Championship last season, Ndong didn’t fare much better, losing his place in the squad after a red card against Middlesbrough in November 2017 which would eventually see him leave for Watford on loan in January.
Overall, Ndong played 55 times for Sunderland across his two seasons at the Stadium of Light, scoring one goal and recording five assists.
