Mbappe has what it takes to be the best player in the world, says Owen

Paris Saint-Germain and France wonderkid Kylian Mbappe has the ability to become the best player in the world, according to former England striker Michael Owen.

Mbappe has rapidly evolved into one of the most dangerous strikers on both the domestic and international stage, enjoying success with both his club and country across the last year.

Having secured the league and cup double for PSG in his first season playing for the Ligue 1 champions, he then starred for France this summer in Russia where the French won their first World Cup trophy in 20 years.

Mbappe, who scored four goals this summer as France lifted the trophy – including a fine finish in the 4-2 final win over fellow Europeans Croatia – has attracted the attention and praise of former England centre-forward Michael Owen.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker has insisted that the young Frenchman has exactly what it takes to ensure that he becomes the greatest player in the world in the years to come.

Owen told BT Sport (via the Daily Mail): “I was sat watching them (France) against Argentina and he ran past everyone and won a penalty. I thought ‘I did that when I was 18’.

“And then he ran past everyone and scored a great goal and I was like ‘oh my word’. Then of course in the press the next day, was all the comparisons.

“I think sometimes a kid comes along and of course, everyone gets carried away and says ‘he is the next thing’ but they’re not. There is one or two that come every 10 years and he is that.

“People develop at different times. This kid has a great mentality on him and he is obviously lightning fast. And if you are lightning fast, you have a huge advantage straight away.

“You only have to have a bit of ability if you have got that pace. He could turn out to be the best player in the world in time.”
