Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has called on the club to play more attacking football following their disappointing 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against recently promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers.
It was a match United were expected to win, but a goal apiece from summer signings Fred and Joao Moutinho meant both sides finished the 90 minutes with a single point. This leaves United seventh and eight points off league leaders Liverpool.
The Red Devils have been heavily criticised in the past regarding displays under manager Jose Mourinho. In March of this year, Dwight Yorke branded the team’s playing style a “load of crap” and expressed a preference for Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, despite the former United striker being on his old club’s payroll as an ambassador.
Pogba’s recent comments will do nothing to combat such criticism, and his second spell in Manchester has been littered by debates over form and rumours of his departure. The 2018 World Cup winner, who has refused to rule out leaving United again this summer amid links to Barcelona, has publically stated that the side underperformed against Wolves due to failures in attack and a reluctance to press the opposition.
“We are at home and we should play much better against Wolves. We are here to attack,” the 25-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport.
“When we play like [that] it’s easier for us.
“I think teams are scared when they see Manchester United attacking and attacking. That was our mistake.”
Wolves are the only team to take points of reigning champions Manchester City, but Mourinho himself said he was more frustrated with his players’ attitude on Saturday than following their 3-0 home defeat against Spurs last month.
Pogba added: “Maybe the attitude should be better and we should play better because, again, we are at Old Trafford and we should just attack and press like we did against Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal last season.”
How did Pogba fare vs Wolves?
There is evidence to suggest no United player contributed more in an attacking sense against Wolves than Pogba. Aside from assisting Fred’s opener, he recorded the joint-most chances created and shots of any player in red while dribbling past two opponents; only Alexis Sanchez completed more take-ons.
He did, however, lose possession 25 times, more than any other player on the pitch. The most costly among those occasions took place during the passage of play in which Joao Moutinho levelled for Wolves in the 53rd minute.
What’s next on Manchester United’s fixture list?
Manchester United play Frank Lampard’s Derby County at Old Trafford this Wednesday in the Football League Cup before travelling to the London Stadium on Saturday to face West Ham United in the Premier League.
