Totti: I tried to bring Ibrahimovic to Roma

Roma director Francesco Totti says he tried to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo to the club.

The Roma legend was a one-club man and spent a quarter of a century playing for his boyhood team, making 786 appearances and scoring 307 goals.

Totti only got to lift the Serie A title once during his long playing career and the former midfielder says he campaigned to bring football’s biggest stars to the Italian capital over the years to help his hometown club add more trophies.

Speaking to La Repubblica (via Goal), he said: “I’ve always said you need champions to win.

“I hoped Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, the best players in the world would come. Not just up-front, but also defenders and midfielders.

“Unfortunately, we had a limit, we didn’t have the financial muscle to spend on these champions. Really, I tried to bring unthinkable people to Roma.”

Ibrahimovic is currently winding his career down in California with LA Galaxy after a stellar career with some of the biggest clubs in world football. These included four of the richest clubs in the world, including Juventus, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

Similarly Ronaldo has spent the bulk of his career playing for Man Utd and Real Madrid who have invariably been the top-two richest clubs on the planet for the last 20 years.

Roma have less wealth than south London side Crystal Palace and fall outside of the top 20 richest clubs in the world. Thus, It’s hardly surprising that Totti was unable to land those big fish.
