Wolves are the best newly-promoted side in Premier League history, says Phil Neville

Phil Neville believes Wolves are the ‘best side that has ever come up from the Championship’.

Wolves earned an impressive 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Joao Moutinho’s equaliser cancelling out Fred’s opening goal, and are now on nine points from six games, losing just once in the process.

The game against the Red Devils saw Wolves hit eight shots on target – two more than Man United – despite only having just over 35% possession of the ball.

And Neville, a former Manchester United and Everton defender, has lavished praise upon Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, believing they won’t ‘fear’ any team in the Premier League this season.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Neville said: “Defensively, they are really solid. You saw in the United game yesterday [Saturday], United struggled to break them down.

“I think they are the best side that has ever come up from the Championship, I really do. I think they’re brilliantly coached, I think he’s got the balance right – Nuno – between defending in numbers and strength and then attacking with quality in midfield.”

The show’s presenter, Mark Chapman, then asked Neville if he thought this Wolves side is even better than the Kevin Keegan Newcastle side that finished third in their first season – 1993/94 – after being promoted to the Premier League – Andy Cole netted 34 goals for the Magpies in that campaign.

Neville responded: “I think they’re the best side that has ever come up from the Championship. They have spent money, but they’ve got quality players.

“You saw yesterday [Saturday] the strength in depth they’ve got on the bench, the quality they’ve got up front. The two midfield players – João Moutinho and Ruben Neves. They will not be scared of going to any Premier League ground.”

Wolves face Leicester City at home in the League Cup on Tuesday evening before taking on Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
