Klopp loved Firmino’s celebration as one-eyed No.9 moves closer to Gerrard

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he “loved” Roberto Firmino‘s celebration after the Brazilian scored an injury-time winner in his side’s Champions League win over Paris-Saint Germain on Tuesday.

PSG came from two goals down to level the scores at 2-2 in Liverpool’s Champions League opener at Anfield, only for Firmino to come off the bench and win it for the hosts at the death.

The striker had to visit a specialist eye hospital after taking a finger in the eye from Jan Vertonghen during last weekend’s Premier League victory over Tottenham.

He was subsequently left out of the starting line-up for Tuesday’s match, replaced by Daniel Sturridge, who scored the first goal on the night.

But Firmino’s impact off the bench could not have been more important, placing a hand over his injured eye while celebrating his 12th Champions League goal – only Steven Gerrard (30) has scored more often in the competition.

“To come off the bench after his injury at the weekend is incredible really,” Klopp told reporters (via BBC Sport).

“Daniel (Sturridge) played a super game. I have never seen him as fit as he is in the moment. Then you can bring Bobby Firmino on and that helps a lot. I can’t say enough good things about Bobby.”

Liverpool currently sit second in the Premier League – level on points with top of the table Chelsea but behind on goal difference – after winning each of their opening five games.

Klopp’s men also top their Champions League group after Red Star Belgrade and Napoli played out a goalless draw.

Next up for the Reds in the Premier League is a home match against Southampton on Saturday.
