Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has heaped praise on Thomas Tuchel, branding the German tactician as the best manager in the world.
Tuchel, 45, took charge of the Ligue 1 giants over the summer after a 12-month break from football, having been sacked by Borussia Dortmund after falling out with the club’s hierarchy in May 2017.
Despite this, the young technocrat was recognised during his time at the Westfalenstadion for his meticulous attention to detail and modern thinking, leading to a stampede of clubs chasing his signature over the summer.
However, the Parisians won the race and the German has so far won his opening five league matches in charge of the club, but domestic dominance is par for the course at the Parc des Princes, and he was employed to flourish on the European stage.
PSG kickstarted their Champions League campaign on Tuesday night with a defeat to Liverpool but Al-Khelaifi believes Tuchel get can get the job done.
“Paris has the players and the coach to do something there [at Anfield],” Al-Khelaifi told Telefoot before the game. “We have the best coach in the world.”
PSG have fallen short in the continent’s elite knockout tournament in recent seasons, having been eliminated in the round-of-16 the past two campaigns and only reaching the quarter-final in the four seasons before that.
Tuchel’s forward thinking approach has been likened to German compatriot and Tuesday night’s rival Jurgen Klopp, and both managers have followed similar career paths, having each started at Mainz 05 before moving on to Borussia Dortmund.
The two had previously locked horns at Anfield during Klopp’s maiden campaign on Merseyside; Liverpool came from 3-1 down to beat Dortmund 4-3 in the Europa League quarter-finals in 2016.
And it was a similar ending once more for Tuchel, as Daniel Sturridge, James Milner and Roberto Firmino scored in a 3-2 win for Liverpool, cancelling out goals from Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe.
