Alphonso Davies completes Bayern Munich switch in MLS record move

Bayern Munich have announced the signing of highly-coveted teenage winger Alphonso Davies from Vancouver Whitecaps for an MLS record $22m.

Davies, 17, has penned a five-year contract at the Allianz Arena, but the teenager will not officially join the club until 1 January 2019 once he has turned 18 in November.

The Ghana-born Canadian has featured in 68 matches for Vancouver Whitecaps across all competitions since making his first-team debut in 2016, scoring seven goals, including three in the MLS this season.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic lauded the recruitment of the lethal winger, believing the Bavarians fended off intense interest from a number of European clubs.

He told the club’s official website: “Alphonso Davies is a very great talent. At only 17, he promises a lot for the future. Alphonso already has great skills and was not hotly courted by many top clubs for nothing. So I am very pleased that Davies has chosen FC Bayern.

“I would like to thank all those who worked on this transfer, especially our scouting and legal departments. That was great teamwork.”

Davies also revealed his delight in signing for the German champions, admitting the move is a dream come true.

He said: “I am very happy with my move to Bayern. As a kid I always dreamed of such a moment. Now the dream has come true.

“But now the work continues, now I have to give everything to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Davies becomes the club’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the acquisition of Schalke midfielder and German international Leon Goretzka on a free transfer.

Newley appointed Niko Kovac will be looking to stretch Bayern Munich’s stranglehold over the Bundesliga, where domestic dominance is par for the course in Munich for any new manager.

Davies will provide the club some serious firepower on the wing when he joins the club in the new year, but for now, the Vancouver Whitecaps will enjoy his exploits for another five months as the club currently sit ninth in the Western Conference of the Major League Soccer.

Despite not yet turning 18, Davies already has six caps for Canada and three goals to his name at international level.
