Eredivisie top scorer Alireza Jahanbakhsh joins Brighton in £17m deal

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Iranian winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh for a club-record £17m fee from AZ Alkmaar.

Jahanbakhsh, 24, has put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract at the Amex Stadium, keeping him at the club until June 2023, and he becomes the club’s eighth major signing in an exceptionally busy window for the Seagulls.

The Iranian winger scored 21 goals for AZ Alkmaar last term, making him the highest goalscorer in the Eredivisie, and he flew into Biggin Hill airport last night to undergo his medical today.

Manager Chris Hughton has been keen to add significant firepower to his side for the forthcoming campaign, and he spoke of his delight in capturing the prolific midfielder.

“We are delighted to welcome Alireza to the club, and we are particularly pleased to get this deal over the line,” he told the club’s official website.

“Ali is a player that we have been aware of and monitored for a few years, and his versatility will increase our attacking options within the squad.

“He can play in a wide position or central midfield attacking role, and I am now very much looking forward to working with him.”

Jahanbakhsh will be seen as a massive coup for the club as he scored the most goals in the Dutch league last season, took on the second-most shots (143), provided the third-most assists (12), created the seventh-most chances (78) and completed the fourth-most take-ons (111).

Jahanbakhsh has 41 caps to his name for Iran, and played in all three of the nation’s matches at the World Cup, as they drew 1-1 with Portugal, beat Morocco 1-0 and narrowly lost to Spain.

Brighton’s previous record signing was PSV winger Jurgen Locadia, who moved to the club for £14m in the January transfer window last season.
