Angry Anderlecht manager explains why Liverpool transfer deal collapsed

Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck has says his side’s failure to sign Lazar Markovic from Liverpool was down to the players wage demands.

Markovic had looked likely to finally bring his Liverpool career to an end on the final day of the Belgian transfer window, with Vanhaezebrouck’s side battling to secure his signature.

A £2.9m fee was agreed, but the deal fell through, leaving Markovic at Liverpool until at least the New Year in the knowledge that he is unlikely to feature for the Reds under Jürgen Klopp.

The Anderlecht boss has revealed why he believes no deal materialised.

“We wanted a third striker, and an offensive player with an action and the ability to walk between the lines,” he said (via HLN).

“He [Markovic] could have helped us, yes. But it is only due to Markovic that the deal has not continued. The club wanted to go very far. So far even that the chairman was prepared to do crazy things.

“I do not blame the chairman [Marc Coucke] and [sporting director] Luc [Devroe] for anything.”

Markovic’s Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season and the Serbian will now leave the club either in January or next summer on a free transfer.

Markovic’s torrid Liverpool career

Signed in the summer of 2014 for £20m, Markovic moved to Liverpool having made a name for himself as one of Benfica’s most exciting young players.

But he has since failed to make an impact at Liverpool, playing just 34 games across all competitions for the Reds, scoring three goals.

His last competitive appearance for Liverpool came in May 2015, with the forward shipped out on loan to Fenerbahce, Hull City, Sporting Lisbon and Anderlecht since then.
