Belgian club Gent confuse new signing Arnaud Souquet with his old Nice team-mate

Gent confirmed the signing of Nice right-back Arnaud Souquet but announced his arrival by posting a picture of the defender’s former team-mate Vincent Koziello on their social media accounts.

Souquet, 26, has been a reasonably consistent figure at the Allianz Riviera since relocating from Dijon in 2016, but he has now parted from Patrick Vieira’s side and signed a four-year deal with Gent.

Meanwhile, Koziello – a 22-year-old former France U21 international – left Les Aiglons in January for German club FC Cologne; meaning that not only did Gent post a picture on their official Twitter account of the wrong player, but also one that doesn’t even play for Nice anymore.

After realising their mistake, De Buffalo’s quickly deleted and reposted a Tweet with the correct player, albeit with a tongue in cheek message stressing that they had, in fact, definitely not signed Koziello.

One Twitter user was quick to relax the situation by suggesting that Gent had made them laugh, before the club replied: “Yes but it was because we knew that the departure of Arnaud would leave a bit bitter taste at home. So we decided to offer you a good little joke.”

Gent failed to qualify for the Europa League after losing 2-0 on aggregate to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux on Thursday, but have the chance to bounce back when they take on Cercle Brugge on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Nice clinched their first victory of the season on Friday night after a shaky start to Vieira’s tenure, with his side claiming a 1-0 win over Lyon at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Their next match is against Rennes at home next Saturday.
