Giggs and Gattuso included in FUT icons as EA release latest batch

With the football season now well underway, fans are starting to look forward to the release of FIFA 19.

The game is set to be released at the end of September and in anticipation, EA Sports are beginning to tease players with the announcements of more Icon cards.

Icon cards are part of FIFA Ultimate Team, which allows fans the chance to use some of football’s greatest ever players including the likes of Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo.

While some cards have already been announced, on Wednesday EA Sports added to the excitement with four new players introduced to the game.

First to be revealed was former attacking midfielder Socrates, who played 60 games for the Brazilian national team while also spending his entire club career in his native country.

Following him was current AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso, who won two Champions League titles with the Rossoneri and one World Cup with Italy, among other trophies during his playing career.

A third midfielder was then announced with Portuguese legend Luis Figo joining the party, a member of Real Madrid’s Galacticos squad who also represented Barcelona.

Former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Michael Ballack was the fourth player announced, with the game paying homage to his successful career.

Ex-Arsenal man Jens Lehmann joined his compatriot, heralded for his part in Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003/04, the first goalkeeping ICON to be revealed for this season’s FUT.

Next came Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend George Best, a new Icon fans are most looking forward to using having been a part of FUT Legends before the rebrand.

Christian Vieri came next, a fantastic goalscorer throughout his career for the likes of Inter Milan and the Italian national team.

There was another return from FIFA 17 FUT Legends with former Bulgarian forward Hristo Stoichkov back on the roster for the latest edition.

Then, another current manager and Manchester United legend was added with Ryan Giggs returning after a year’s absence.

The nine newly-released players add to the 10 names already on the FUT Icons list, with many more expected to return from FIFA 18.

So far, the highest rated Icon released is Netherlands and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff, who leads the way ahead of Eusebio, Roberto Baggio and Raul.

In their initial announcement in August, listing the names of the first 10 Icons, EA Sports sent Twitter into heated discussion by rating Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard higher than his former Chelsea counterpart Frank Lampard – something which split football fans throughout their careers and beyond.

Also included as Icons so far are Rivaldo, Fabio Cannavaro, Clarence Seedorf and Claude Makelele.
