I was living in hell at Man Utd – Zaha

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has admitted that he suffered with depression while at Manchester United, describing his time there as ‘hell’.

Zaha moved to the Red Devils for £10 million back in 2013 after impressing for Palace at Championship level.

However, after making just four appearances for United in his debut campaign in Manchester, Zaha spent the remainder of the season on loan at Cardiff City.

Following his tough spell with the Red Devils, and the swift removal of David Moyes as manager, Zaha returned to Crystal Palace – at first on loan, then permanently – and has been their star player ever since.

Looking back on his time at Manchester United, Zaha admitted it was tough for him and that he didn’t feel he had enough support from the club.

“When I was at United I had money but I was still so down and depressed,” Zaha told The Guardian (via the Evening Standard).

“People think your life’s different because you’ve got money, you’ve got fame, so they don’t treat you the same.

“There were rumours that the reason I wasn’t playing for United was because I slept with David Moyes’ daughter, and no one attempted to clear that up.

“I was fighting my demons by myself, these rumours that I knew weren’t true.”

Despite his struggles, Zaha believes that dealing with his problems in Manchester, especially at such a young age, made him the player that he is today.

The 25-year-old added: “I was dealing with this at 19; living in Manchester by myself, nowhere near anyone else, because the club had a hold over where I lived. They hadn’t given me a car, like every other player. Nothing.

“I’m living in this hell by myself, away from my family, and I thought: ‘If this doesn’t make me stronger, what will?’”

Since his return to Crystal Palace in 2014, Zaha has played 148 times in all competitions for the Eagles, scoring 28 goals and recording 27 assists.

Zaha’s Crystal Palace side take on Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday before travelling to West Brom in the League Cup on Tuesday.
