Former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane believes he would be a ‘perfect fit’ in Jurgen Klopp’s front three, calling their system ‘a striker’s dream’.
Keane, who is the Republic of Ireland’s record goalscorer, enjoyed a largely successful career playing for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Inter Milan.
His time at Liverpool, however, wasn’t the best and Keane returned to Tottenham after just half a season with the Merseyside club in 2008/09.
But that hasn’t stopped him revelling in Liverpool’s current attacking options, with the 38-year-old even comparing his own game to that of Roberto Firmino.
Keane said (via Football365): “I’d love to play in their front three, I’d fit in perfect!
“The way Firmino plays is very similar to my game. I like to drop off, in that number ten role, and if you’ve got two players who are that quick to play in on either side of you, it’s a striker’s dream.
“The problem that other teams have is that, already when you play against them, you’re on the back foot straight away, because of how quick they are and how direct they are when they’re getting in behind with balls in-between the lines.”
Keane also mentioned how top teams, such as Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham, couldn’t deal with Liverpool’s attacking threat, adding: “We’ve seen it against top teams this week in Tottenham and PSG, they couldn’t deal with it. They create so many chances, they’re a horrible team to play against.”
Keane’s record at Liverpool
There was much clamour around Liverpool’s £19 million capture of Robbie Keane in July 2008, especially considering the Irishman had scored 45 goals in all competitions for Spurs in his previous two seasons.
However, his move to Merseyside just didn’t work out and within seven months, Keane was back in North London having registered just seven goals and five assists across 28 competitive games for the Reds.
Liverpool also made a reported £7 million loss on Keane, selling him back to Spurs for just £12 million.
