I’ve never seen Sturridge fitter at Liverpool than he is now – Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has praised Daniel Sturridge‘s performance against Paris Saint-Germain, revealing the striker is the fittest he’s been in three years.

The Reds gave up a 2-0 lead in Tuesday’s Champions League opener as PSG fought back to seemingly earn an unlikely draw, but Roberto Firmino’s injury-time winner secured the points late on.

Sturridge opened the scoring for Liverpool on the night, on his first Champions League start since 2012, heading in Andy Robertson’s cross midway through the first half.

After the game, Klopp talked up the 29-year-old’s display.

“Super game,” Klopp told BT Sport. “I told him before the game, I’ve never seen him – since I’ve [been here] – as fit as he is at the moment.

“And he used that fitness. He was all over the park, he was everywhere, he helped left, he helped right, he kept the ball for us.

“[He was] being a nine-and-a-half, a ten, whatever. Being in the box when needed, being in-between when needed, and he did that really well.”

James Milner doubled Liverpool’s lead from the penalty before goals either side of half-time from Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe saw PSG draw level.

But Firmino, who replaced Sturridge from the bench, scored the winning goal at the death to ensure Liverpool topped their group by the end of the night.

Sturridge has scored twice in all competitions this term – his start against PSG was his first of the season.

He’ll be hoping to feature in the starting line-up once again when Liverpool welcome Southampton to Anfield in the Premier League this weekend.
