Jan Vertonghen hopeful of extra year at Spurs

Jan Vertonghen says he hopes Tottenham will extend his contract after acknowledging that his current deal is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Belgian, who has made 243 appearances for Spurs across all competitions since joining from Ajax in 2012, was the club’s standout defender last season, emerging as one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.

His compatriot Toby Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer but ended up staying in north London.

And Vertonghen could plausibly make an exit from Tottenham sooner than his defensive teammate, as he will be able to speak with foreign clubs in January.

However, the 31-year-old believes Spurs will take up the option to trigger a one-year contract extension when the time comes.

“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year,” Vertonghen said, according to HLN journalist Kristof Terreur.

“I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

Vertonghen played a key role for Belgium as the Red Devils reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russia over the summer, only to lose against eventual winners France.

He will be hoping to feature for his country in a friendly against Scotland at Hampden this week.
