Jose Mourinho backs Ed Woodward after Burnley plane banner

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho claims he didn’t see the plane banner criticising executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward during United’s clash with Burnley on Sunday.

United fans made their feelings known to the club’s board with a banner flown over Turf Moor which read ‘Ed Woodward – a specialist in failure’, throwing back to Mourinho’s phrase used to describe former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger when he was in charge of Chelsea.

Prior to the club’s 2-0 win against Sean Dyche’s side, the Red Devils had been beaten in two of their opening three games, with Mourinho under increasing pressure to deliver results.

Woodward has also come under fire after reports suggested that he had refused to back Mourinho in the summer transfer window and the banner suggests that many fans are more disappointed with him than they are Mourinho.

When asked if he had seen the banner after the game, Mourinho told reporters:

“I don’t watch. In the match I’m not looking to the sky unless I’m asking something for the guy to give me help, I didn’t see planes but Ed Woodward won this afternoon. He won 2-0.”

United made just three signings in the summer transfer window, bringing in Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.

Woodward became the main man at Old Trafford in 2013 and has seen some big-name transfers arrive during his spell with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku all joining United.

But United have won just three trophies in that time, one FA Cup, one League Cup and one Europa League, and have failed to mount significant title challenges.

A brief history of Premier League planes

The plane on Sunday was not first time fans have taken to the skies to voice their concerns or show support for their clubs.

Millwall fans were the culprits behind the first high-profile plane banner in recent Premier League seasons, flying ‘Avram Grant Millwall Legend’ over the DW Stadium as West Ham United were relegated to the Championship following a 3-2 defeat to Wigan Athletic in 2011.

Later that year, Blackburn Rovers used a plane to protest Steve Kean after a poor start to the season which saw them win just one of their opening 10 games.

Arsenal fans almost made a name for themselves with plane banners both in support of, and against Arsene Wenger during his reign at the Emirates.

Sunday was not be the first time United fans have protested against the club, with David Moyes being the subject of a ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’ message late on in his ill-fated reign.
