Liverpool don’t expect Salah to repeat last season’s goalscoring record, says Klopp

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is not under any pressure to repeat his goalscoring feats from last season, according to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Salah finished his first season with Liverpool having scored 44 goals across all competitions including 32 in the Premier League to win the Golden Boot.

But the Egyptian has been slightly subdued at the start of the current campaign, scoring just twice in his six appearances so far.

However, Liverpool boss Klopp is not worried about Salah’s form and when asked about it in a pre-match press conference, reminded reporters of a similar start last season.

“Wow, that’s a crisis!” Klopp said (via the Liverpool Echo). “No-one remembers that, it is really no problem.

“Of course everyone expects that (he will be as prolific as last season) but we don’t expect that. We want him to score as often as possible.

“We constantly have to deal with new situations. People are very positive about this player, this player, and I have to decide do I talk to them about them or not, do I leave him alone in this situation, but everything is fine really.

“Yes, he lost the ball before we conceded the second (Paris Saint-Germain) goal but it was a very intense game and things like this happen constantly. You don’t always concede a goal after it but this time we did.

“It was not the reason to take him off. I am fine with him, I think he is fine with me and the situation.

“At the end of the season we will see how it was, not at the beginning. The start was good for the team and also him as well. It wasn’t like he finished last season but he needed time last year and we will take time this year, that’s all.”

Salah and Liverpool will be looking to continue their perfect start to the season this weekend, when they welcome Southampton to Anfield on Saturday.

Salah’s slow start

While a lot of eyes have been on Liverpool winning all five of their opening Premier League games, with the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane starring, Salah has been slightly under par.

The Egyptian’s two goals have come from 23 shots in total, at a conversion rate of just 8.7%, some way below the 22.22% he managed last season with 32 goals from 144 shots.

Salah is, however, creating more chances for his Liverpool team-mates this season averaging 3.36 per 90 minutes compared to 1.91 last term.
