Sergio Romero: I don’t why we aren’t using Lionel Messi’s No.10 shirt

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is unsure why there is no No.10 in Argentina‘s latest squad.

La Albiceleste beat Guatemala 3-0 in a friendly on Friday night in what was interim boss Lionel Scaloni’s first game in charge, and face Colombia on Tuesday.

However, Lionel Messi is not part of the squad after announcing last month that he would not play for the national team again in 2018 and there are fears he may retire again from the international scene following his country’s disappointing World Cup.

United goalkeeper Romero does not understand why no-one has taken the Barcelona legend’s number for this current set of matches.

“The No.10 shirt jersey has always been used,” he told TyC Sports, as reported by the Mirror.

“I don’t understand why it’s not being used now. I haven’t asked. I haven’t enquired. I had no idea it wasn’t going to be used.”

Scaloni, who has stepped into the managerial hotseat temporarily following the departure of Jorge Sampaoli, would have expected to win Friday’s encounter against their Central American opponents.

However, it was pleasing for the former West Ham United full-back to see his charges keep a clean sheet after the defensive woes they experienced this summer in Russia.

Romero was an unused substitute in the win, but will be expected once again to be Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper once competitive action starts having missed the World Cup due to injury.
