Graeme Souness says he would pick Liverpool midfielder James Milner “every day of the week” over Manchester United star Paul Pogba.
The ex-footballer turned pundit has been a vocal critic of Pogba since his arrival to United in 2016, so this admission shouldn’t come as any surprise.
However, it also shouldn’t downplay Milner, who is currently playing some of his best football with Liverpool.
“Would I rather have Paul Pogba or James Milner in my team?,” Souness wrote in his Paddy Power column.
“That’s easy. It isn’t even a question. Milner, every day of the week. He’s a proper player.
“Who would I rather play against? Paul Pogba. I don’t want to play against Milner.
“But, with Pogba, it’s all about him and his game. He’s not going to stop me, he lets you play, and that’s one of the criticisms. Having the ball is only half of the game. A big part of being a top player, as he aspires to be, is you have to stop the guy you’re up against.”
Milner’s Liverpool career in numbers
The former England international joined Liverpool from Manchester City in the summer of 2015 and has been a near ever-present under Jurgen Klopp since the German coach was appointed as Liverpool boss later that year.
So far during his Anfield career, which amounts to 138 matches and counting, the former Leeds United academy graduate has been utilised in various positions most notably at left-back but has since reverted back to his usual midfield role.
Across those appearances he’s registered 17 goals, with many of them coming from the penalty spot, and created a further 31 for his teammates.
Milner’s present deal expires in June 2019 and he’s expected to feature when Klopp’s men face Southampton this weekend.
