Watford striker Troy Deeney has questioned England boss Gareth Southgate’s selection policy suggesting if there was a meritocracy in place he’d be in his squad instead of Danny Welbeck who struggles to regularly start for Arsenal.
The 30-year-old marksman is enjoying a productive start to this season with many tipping him for an international call-up, however, there was no such luck in the recent break with Southgate hinting Deeney’s qualities fall short of what he’s looking for.
Although the Birmingham-born striker was flattered to have his name in the conversation he was disappointed with the Three Lions manager’s words feeling it’s a matter of who you play rather than actively playing that is the deciding factor.
“I respected his decision, I can’t say I was overjoyed not to be in it, I’m one of those that believe you have to earn it, I don’t think four games is anywhere near enough to say I should be in the England team,” he told the Premier League Show (via the Daily Mail).
“I think his response was interesting, that he’s good enough for Watford but not for us, that message comes across that anyone who plays for a lesser team that doesn’t plays a certain style of football isn’t going to be good enough for England.
“If you look at a Danny Ings, Glenn Murray, Callum Wilson, we would probably all be arguing well what do I need to be in the team? Because no offence to Danny Welbeck, I’ve got a lot of time for Danny Welbeck, but he’s not playing but he’s still being picked, so is it a case that’s just the team?”
Deeney’s journey
Since breaking through at Walsall the Brummie centre-forward has to date represented three clubs (including a season-long spell at Halesowen Town) with Watford being his latest.
His time at Vicarage Road seen him make no fewer than 339 appearances in all competitions; across those outings he’d bag 114 goals and create a further 53 for his teammates.
Deeney’s numbers in the Premier League since August 2015 speaks for itself. Only the quartet of Harry Kane (97), Jamie Vardy (70), Dele Alli (64) and Raheem Sterling (53) have been involved in more goals than Deeney (44) from an English perspective.
