Souness: Pogba hasn’t improved since joining Man Utd

Graeme Souness has again criticised Manchester United and France star Paul Pogba despite his impressive performance in the Red Devils’ Champions League opener against Young Boys.

Pogba netted a first-half brace against the Swiss side before setting up Anthony Martial to score United’s third goal on Wednesday night.

The World Cup winner has recently hinted that all is not well at United, with reports suggesting Barcelona are among the sides monitoring his situation at Old Trafford.

But Mourinho continues to put his faith in Pogba and has made him captain in the absence of Antonio Valencia.

Despite his good form, Souness says he believes Pogba has not improved since his £89m-return to United in 2016 and has questioned his attitude towards the game.

“If he wants to become a star, someone that can run games and someone people talk about like a proper player, he has to show consistency and leadership,” Souness told Virgin Media Sport (via Goal).

“He has the armband now and he has got to change his attitude – to football.

“I bet he is a really nice guy but I wonder if he treats football as a bit of a joke.

“I wonder if he trains properly every day, that is a stab at the dark at something that could improve. I don’t see him having improved at all since the day he arrived.

“He came in for €100 million and you factor in that Man United do pay a premium because they’re one of the biggest and richest football clubs in the world, and the riches of the Premier League, but I don’t see much difference in him from when he turned up.”

Pogba’s second goal on Wednesday night came from the penalty spot and Mourinho said after the game that he was impressed by the midfielder’s courage to step up and take responsibility, despite having missed his last penalty against Burnley.

His latest goals take his tally for the season to four and the midfielder will be hoping to add to that in United’s home clash with Wolves this Saturday.
