Toni Kroos has let loose on his Germany teammate Leroy Sane, saying that the Manchester City winger “doesn’t care if we win or lose”.
Sane was left out of the German squad that flopped at this summer’s World Cup in Russia but is now back in Joachim Low’s reckoning.
He and Kroos are preparing for Germany’s inaugural Uefa Nations League tie against France on Thursday, with the Real Madrid midfielder saving some harsh words for Sane.
Kroos told a press conference (via the Mirror): “You sometimes get the feeling that it doesn’t matter to him if we win or lose.
“It’s about showing his qualities. Then he can be an absolute weapon for us.
“He has got everything to become a world-class player, but sometimes, he needs to be told what to do.
“If he brings all his quality to the pitch, he can help us a lot.”
Sane has played just 11 times for the German national team, and is yet to score a goal.
What have others said about Sane?
Following Sane’s omission from Manchester City’s matchday squad against Newcastle at the weekend, manager Pep Guardiola was quick to defend his player, who scored 14 goals in 49 games across all competitions last season, saying that he had not ‘let him down’.
“In the last game, Phil Foden was not in the squad. I was so sad for Phil, I’m so sad for Leroy now but we have a squad. Sometimes I have to leave players out,” Guardiola said (via SuperSport).
“We have six strikers and I decide to play with two strikers. We have two wingers plus another one on the bench.
“That’s why we decided this game: Don’t be there (in the squad), try to work hard again and in the next games he will be ready to play.”
Meanwhile, Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus has said he will be working hard to avoid the same matchday fate as Sane but has backed the German’s quality.
Following the game against Newcastle, Jesus said (via the Evening Standard): “It’s normal with this amazing squad, today it was Sane, but in the future, it’s going to be me or other players too.
“I’m going to work hard to avoid that from happening to me, though.”
And on Sane: “We all know the quality Sane has, his importance in the club, but it’s the beginning of the season, it’s normal that some players have started stronger or are more fit than others.
“I just hope when he comes back to the team he’s at 100 per cent and he’s able to help us as he’s always done”
