Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has credited former club boss Pep Guardiola for helping him achieve his “dream career”.
The two were together at the Nou Camp for four years under Guardiola’s leadership and it was in this time that both individuals were a part of one of the best footballing sides and most successful teams in football history.
Between 2008 and 2012, Barcelona won La Liga three times (2008–09, 2009–10 and 2010–11), Uefa Champions League twice (2008-09 and 2010-11), Copa del Rey (2008–09 and 2011–12), Uefa Super Cup (2009 and 2011), Supercopa de España (2009, 2010 and 2011) and Fifa Club World Cup (2009 and 2011).
Despite Guardiola’s departure from Barcelona in 2012, Busquets has continued his success at the club – making 487 appearances in all competitions to date – and has heaped heavy praise upon the now-Manchester City manager.
Speaking to reporters via Football Espana, Busquets said: “To win so many titles, play so many matches and experiencing such incredible feelings are aspects I could never have dreamt of,” Busquets told Barcelona club media.
“Of course, this is what you work hard for and it is the aim for every player, but few are lucky enough to have such a career path.
“It started very well because I was afforded a lot of minutes and was winning trophies straight away, despite my young ages.
“I was very nervous at the start but obviously the Coach (Pep Guardiola) knew me from Barcelona B and he helped me a lot.”
Barcelona and Busquets will be looking to win the Champions League back from Real Madrid, kicking off their group stage campaign against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday.
