FIFA 19 ratings: Every breakthrough player revealed in the top 100 so far

With under three weeks to go until FIFA 19 is released, excitement is building.

As in the two previous editions of the world’s most popular football game, the release of player ratings was staggered, with those ranked 100-31 named so far.

Of those 70, a staggering 25 did not make the top 100 last year, partly attributable to Manchester City’s spectacular improvement in a record-breaking season.

Here are the newcomers whose 2017-18 performances have been recognised:

1. Kostas Manolas (Roma)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+1)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 83 pace

Manolas was a vital component of Serie A’s second-meanest defence last term and scored the decisive goal in April as Eusebio Di Francesco’s men stunningly overhauled a three-goal deficit against Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals.

2. Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+2)

Position: RW

Standout stat: 90 dribbling

After an indifferent 2016-17, the tricky Algerian was back to his best last season, bagging 12 Premier League goals and 10 assists as Leicester City finished ninth. This form earned him a £60m move to the Etihad, making him the most expensive African player ever.

3. Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+3)

Position: RW

Standout stat: 93 pace

The 23-year-old answered his critics who questioned his ability to finish, as he netted 23 goals in all competitions in an unforgettable season for Man City. Got off the mark in the current campaign with the opener in the 2-0 win away at Arsenal.

4. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+5)

Position: CM

Standout stat: 84 physicality

The imposing Serbian’s deceptively deft touch, impressive passing and surging runs from midfield have won him admirers across Europe and his 12 Serie A goals played no small part in Simone Inzaghi’s men finishing an impressive fifth last season, missing out on the top four only on head-to-head with Inter Milan.

5. Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+4)

Position: RB

Standout stat: 83 passing

Kimmich has firmly established himself as one of the world’s best right-backs and mustered nine assists as Bayern sauntered to their sixth successive Bundesliga title. Also scored in both legs of their 4-3 Champions League semi-final aggregate loss to Real Madrid.

6. Edin Dzeko (Roma)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+1)

Position: ST

Standout stat: 85 shooting

Despite scoring 13 fewer Serie A goals than in 2016-17, Dzeko makes the cut. Overall, however, 24 strikes in all competitions for his club represents a decent return, with a sumptuous volley against Chelsea in last season’s Champions League the pick of the bunch.

7. Koke (Atletico Madrid)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+1)

Position: CM

Standout stat: 88 passing

Despite a disappointing World Cup with Spain, Koke was once again imperious at the heart of Atleti’s midfield as Diego Simeone’s side finished ahead of city rivals Real and won the Europa League, before kicking off this season by beating their neighbours 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup.

8. Alisson (Liverpool)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+5)

Position: GK

Standout stat: 88 reflexes

Alisson’s exceptional shot-stopping abilities and composure with the ball at his feet made him one of the world’s most sought-after goalkeepers over the summer with Liverpool the eventual winners. Played ahead of fellow Premier League goalkeeper Ederson for Brazil during the World Cup.

9. Fabinho (Liverpool)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+2)

Position: CDM

Standout stat: 84 defending

Another Brazilian to have arrived at Liverpool from continental Europe this summer, Fabinho was unable to help Monaco successfully defend their Ligue 1 title last summer. However, his ability to disrupt play and provide protection for the defence could prove vital for Jurgen Klopp.

10. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

FIFA 19 ratings: 85 (+2)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 84 physicality

A January signing from Southampton, van Dijk was the man Liverpool needed to strengthen their shaky defence and he immediately endeared himself to the Anfield faithful with a debut goal against city rivals Everton. Very quick with excellent positional sense.

11. Medhi Benatia (Juventus)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+2)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 87 defending

Benatia was part of a Juventus side that shipped just 24 Serie A goals last season en route to their seventh straight Italian league crown, with Massimiliano Allegri’s men also getting their hands on the Coppa Italia. Represented Morocco at the World Cup.

12. Dani Parejo (Valencia)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+4)

Position: CM

Standout stat: 88 passing

The metronome in Valencia’s midfield, Parejo was rewarded for his impressive form at the Mestalla with his first international cap in March this year, replacing Thiago Alcantara in a 6-1 friendly win over Argentina. He’s come a long way since his time on loan at Queens Park Rangers in 2008.

13. Nemanja Matic (Manchester United)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+3)

Position: CDM

Standout stat: 76 dribbling

Matic was virtually a mainstay in Jose Mourinho’s midfield last season and added some much-needed composure and awareness in front of the defence, even if United fans were disgruntled for much of the campaign at the team’s dull style of play.

14. Douglas Costa (Juventus)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+4)

Position: LM

Standout stat: 95 pace

A bundle of energy on the left-hand side of midfield, there are few players more electrifying than Costa in full flight. The 27-year-old only started 18 Serie A games, but still ended the season with an excellent 12 assists and won himself a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad.

15. Naldo (Schalke)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+4)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 87 defending

The evergreen 35-year-old is now in his 14th Bundesliga season and seems to be in the form of his life. A phenomenal campaign under the guidance of Domenico Tedesco saw the Gelsenkirchen outfit finish second, with Naldo marshalling the division’s third-best rearguard.

16. Fernandinho (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+4)

Position: CDM

Standout stat: 83 defending

Blessed with a superb engine, Fernandinho excelled in his defensive duties whilst also getting himself on the scoresheet five times in the Premier League last season. The elegant 33-year-old’s game certainly did not suffer following Yaya Toure’s diminishing influence.

17. Leroy Sane (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+4)

Position: LW

Standout stat: 95 pace

One of the leading lights in the Premier League last season, Sane blossomed in his second year in English football and played a notable part in several of Man City’s scintillating breakaway goals, which made it all the more surprising that he was omitted from Germany’s World Cup squad.

18. Ederson (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+3)

Position: GK

Standout stat: 90 kicking

Identified by Guardiola as the player to solve his goalkeeping conundrum, Ederson has certainly repaid the faith shown in him by the former Barcelona boss. The epitome of the modern goalkeeper, the 25-year-old recorded an assist in last month’s 6-1 win over Huddersfield Town.

19. Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+3)

Position: CF

Standout stat: 86 dribbling

Firmino formed an irresistible triumvirate with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and plundered 27 goals in all competitions as Jurgen Klopp’s men surged to the Champions League final. Has gone from strength to strength since arriving from Hoffenheim in 2015.

20. Nicolas Otamendi (Manchester City)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+3)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 86 defending

Perceived by many pundits as the team’s weak link, Otamendi silenced the doubters last season and his improved positional sense, confidence on the ball and increasing aversion to rash tackles saw him become an integral member of Guardiola’s side.

21. Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan)

FIFA 19 ratings: 86 (+2)

Position: LM

Standout stat: 86 pace

Unlike most of the players in this list, Perisic’s most notable contributions last season came for his country, with the 29-year-old emerging as the star player for Croatia and scoring in the World Cup Final. Also recorded an impressive 11 goals and nine assists in Serie A during 2017/18.

22. Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

FIFA 19 ratings: 87 (+5)

Position: ST

Standout stat: 87 shooting

The diminutive Immobile enjoyed undoubtedly the most fruitful season of his career, with 29 Serie A goals in 33 games seeing him tied as top scorer in the league with Mauro Icardi. Rumours that he could depart this season have thankfully not come true for Simone Inzaghi.

23. Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)

FIFA 19 ratings: 87 (+3)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 88 defending

Maurizio Sarri’s Napoli may well have been known for their attacking exploits, but Koulibaly’s presence ensured that the opposition could not have too much joy. The elegant Senegalese defender also added goals to his armoury, with the most high-profile coming in the last minute away at Juventus in April.

24. Samuel Umtiti (Barcelona)

FIFA 19 ratings: 87 (+4)

Position: CB

Standout stat: 88 defending

After winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the World Cup, it’s fair to say Samuel Umtiti has enjoyed a pretty good year. The arrival of fellow Frenchman Clement Lenglet at the Camp Nou will strengthen competition for places, but the 24-year-old has the ability to rise to the challenge.

25. Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

FIFA 19 ratings: 87 (+4)

Position: ST

Standout stat: 96 pace

Following a breakthrough season at Monaco that culminated in the Ligue 1 title, Mbappe has shown that he is not a flash in the pan back in his home city in Paris. He has the ability to become the world’s best and over the summer became the second teenager, after Pele, to score in a World Cup Final.
