AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso has played down his side’s performance after clinching a last-gasp 2-1 win over Roma on Friday night.
The Rossoneri were deadlocked with last season’s Champions League semi-finalists at the San Siro, but a well-timed through ball from loanee Gonzalo Higuain set up youngster Patrick Cutrone who scored the winner in the 95th minute.
After the match, Gattuso was quick to play down the magnitude of the result – a match in which they lost 2-0 last season – claiming that he “can’t talk about a turning point after two games.”
“It’s the second match and already people are asking me if it’s a turning point. There were huge regrets over the defeat to Napoli, we played even better in the first 45 minutes tonight,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia).
“There are four or five sides who have strengthened this season and we’re one of them, but I can’t talk about a turning point after two games. I know how our lads work and that we still need to become a team in some areas.
“We can’t think that we’ll control every game against any opponent. We have to play the ball and that’s essential.”
Gattuso has tried to encourage a more attacking brand of football this term, and that has certainly been the case so far, having scored twice against Serie A runners-up Napoli last week and two against Roma.
The Italian coach has praised the club’s hierarchy for allowing him to bolster his armoury over the summer, and he believes a more “complete squad” will allow him to produce attractive football.
He added: “The club has given me a complete squad with strength in areas we didn’t have before. We had four or five great counter-attacks in the second half and didn’t take them, so we must improve in that sense.”
Milan take on Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena next week, looking to build on their victory over the capital club.
