Modric deserved Champions League award over “unhappy” Ronaldo, says Ramos

Real Madrid star Luka Modric deserved to win the Best Player award at the UEFA awards over former forward Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Sergio Ramos

Modric ran home with the award after a highly successful year which saw him win the UEFA Champions League once again with Madrid after defeating Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side 3-1 in the final.

He was also the main star in the Croatian squad as they surprised many by reaching the World Cup final in Russia this summer, eventually losing out to winners France 4-2 in Moscow.

Ronaldo, who once again impressed with his undoubted world-class abilities, was reportedly unhappy that he didn’t win the award for himself and that he didn’t turn up to the event to see former teammate Modric take the prize as a result.

However, Madrid defender Ramos believes Ronaldo has no problem with Modric, but simply has a problem with not winning the award for himself.

“I do not think Cristiano is unhappy because Modric won the award,” Ramos told reporters (via Football Espana).

“Maybe he is unhappy because he did not win it, but not because a team-mate did instead.

“I think if there is one player who deserves this award then it is Luka.”

Ronaldo is now playing in Italy with Serie A champions Juventus and their next fixture is away to Parma on Saturday evening.
