New Scotland captain Andy Robertson has admitted he is keen to play against Belgium superstar Eden Hazard on Friday.
Scotland host the World Cup’s third-placed team on Friday night in what will be Robertson’s first match as national team captain since manager Alex McLeish awarded him the honour following his terrific form for both club and country.
Robertson has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best full-backs for Liverpool after forcing his way into Jurgen Klopp’s starting line-up last season and providing consistently excellent performances on their way to the Champions League final.
As for Hazard, he will want to continue his excellent start to the season after coming so close to getting his hands on the World Cup trophy this summer in Russia.
Robertson has revealed he is anticipating a tough match against the Belgian Red Devils due to the quality that players such as Hazard possess. However, he is confident both he and his teammates will be ready for the challenge ahead.
Speaking to reporters (via Sky Sports) Robertson said: “He is probably in the top five [players in the world] at the minute. I have come up against him many times so I know what threat he can have.
“Even if he is having a quiet game, he can pop up at any point and turn a game. That is what we are up against.
“He is special. The way he turns and gets at players and commits two or three defenders, there’s not many that have that.
“He has been unbelievable for Chelsea and Belgium and it is somebody that we need to watch.
“The problem with Belgium is, you can’t focus on just Hazard because somebody else pops up. We have to be aware of all of their threats.
“We will be ready for them and do our best to stop them but we must cause them problems going the other way as well.”
Friday’s game will be the 18th meeting between Scotland and Belgium, with the Red Devils boasting the better record of 10 wins, including the past three in a row, to their opponents’ four.
