Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane says he is not overly concerned about being named as the world’s best footballer.
The 25-year-old French central defender has enjoyed a successful year having lifted the Champions League and World Cup with Madrid and France respectively.
His performances have seen many consider him among the best footballers today, and though the Lille-born footballer sees a place for individual awards in football, he’d rather continue winning team prizes.
“I’m glad you told me about it, but it’s not a topic of debate within the group,” he told reporters (via Goal).
“It’s an individual reward. We play a collective sport. It showcases the work done, but it’s a personal one.
“It’s not an objective and if I don’t win it, it won’t be a disappointment. It’s true that last season was exceptional. It will be difficult to do better, unless I put in 40 goals.
“Other players are less mentioned but have been very successful, like [N’Golo] Kante or [Paul] Pogba.”
Varane’s journey
Varane joined Los Blancos from boyhood club Lens in 2011, then under the auspices of Jose Mourinho.
He has since made 236 appearances for the Spanish powerhouses, with 99 of those coming under former boss Zinedine Zidane, who played a pivotal role in him initially moving to Spain.
So far, he’s registered 10 goals and created a further six for his teammates. To date, the Frenchman has lifted four European Cups and two La Liga titles.
At international level, Varane has won 50 caps with Les Bleus since making his debut against Georgia in 2013.
